What is Text Neck?

What is Text Neck?

If you are reading this article right now, think about the position that your body is in.  Is your head forward, shoulders rounded, and your back hunched over?  If the answer is yes, then you are in the posture that leads to what is known as text neck.  Text neck, (also known as iHunch, iPosture and anterior head syndrome), is a repeated stress injury that causes pain and dysfunction in the neck from staring at a cell phone or a hand held electronic device for hours a day in a prolonged slumped posture.  The average head weighs 10-12lbs, however for every inch forward the head moves from the midline, the weight your neck has to carry increases. If we bend our necks forward to 60 degrees, as we do to look at our phones and handheld devices, the stress on our neck increases to 60 pounds of pressure. Over prolonged periods of time this compresses and tightens the muscle, tendons and ligaments structures in the front of the neck, while lengthening the muscles tendon, ligament structures in the back of the neck.  As the tissue is out of a neutral position and stressed for a long period of time it is going to get fatigued, sore, and inflammation will set in.  This can lead to upper back and neck pain along with tension type headaches.  Over time it can start to reverse the natural cervical curve in your neck.  It can also cause alignment problems, early wear and tear on the spine, degeneration, numbness and tingling in the arms and eventual irreversible damage.

As more and more people are using technology, this is becoming a common problem in the US.  Even among the nation’s youth.  The majority of Americans now own a cell phone or some sort of hand held device.  A report by Yoram Wurmser, called The US, Time Spent with Mobile 2019, shows that the average US adult spends 3 hours, 43 minutes on mobile devices in 2019, per day.   It is even higher for youth.  A Washington Post article reports that according to Common Sense Media’s study, teens spend an average of 9 hours a day online and kids ages 8-12 an average of 6 hours a day. Since smart phones haven’t been around long enough to have  too much long term research to go with them there is a general low level of awareness about how being in the slumped posture staring at a phone or tablet affects you over time especially in the young adult population.

Does the thought of getting rid of your devices seem like an unrealistic option?  Good news, you don’t have to say goodbye to technology but there are healthy habits you can practice to avoid prolonged text neck posture and the discomfort and damage that comes with it.  First of all work on changing how you hold your phone.  Hold it as close to eye level as possible to avoid sitting in a hunched over position for hours a day.  If you find that you are bending your neck down to look at your phone, try to take frequent breaks to lift your head up and pull your shoulders back into a neutral position.  Even short breaks that consist of a few seconds can help our tissues recover if you do them frequently. Exercises such as the “chin tuck” are beneficial and can be done anywhere to help increase postural awareness as well as neck muscle strength. To do the chin tuck start by sitting up straight with your shoulders back and your chin parallel to the floor.  Slowly bring your head back as if you were making a “double chin”.  Push your shoulders down and elongate your neck.  Hold this position while you take 3 deep breaths, then release.  Repeat 3 more sets.  If you are still experiencing discomfort in the upper back and neck or numbness and tingling in the arms, chiropractic can help.   A chiropractic adjustment can help address structural and alignment issues that text neck may have created over time to decrease pain and discomfort.   A 2007 review showed chiropractic care as one of the non-pharmacological therapies effective for acute and chronic neck and back pain. A chiropractor can help you with exercises and daily living modifications to incorporate so you can continue to enjoy your smart phone in a way that doesn’t give you pains for doing so.

Posture, Can it Make a Difference?

11 Dec 2019 Blog

Why is Posture So Important?

At some point in your life you have probably heard someone say “stand up straight,” or “you shouldn’t slouch,“ but have you ever really thought about all of the reasons why good posture is so important?  Posture is the position in which you hold your body in.  Our body alignment in relation to gravity.  Why does it matter, one may ask. Your neutral body position is created so that the head and each of the vertebrae are stacked on top of one another to eliminate abnormal wearing of joint surfaces, so the muscles are balanced and being used most efficiently.  When you have proper alignment, the weight is distributed evenly and is transferred down to the pelvis where it is centered and distributed evenly to both legs.  Your center of gravity is important for balance.

Poor posture can have a negative effect on your health.  It adds tension to structures that were not meant to bear weight.  Over time this can wear down bones, joints and ligaments unevenly often creating chronic pain and ultimately lead to irreversible damage.  Some common examples of poor alignment such as forward head carriage, a “slouched” position of the upper back and shoulders, and overarching the low back can all lead to dysfunction and discomfort. There are many influences other than just bad habits that can contribute to bad posture as well.  Weak or tight postural muscles, a lack of flexibility and proper joint motion, stress, obesity, pregnancy can also play a role.

When our bodies move out of neutral position for long periods of time pain is a common result. Prolonged positions where your head is forward such as looking down at your phone can result in neck pain and tension headaches.  It can also cause the temporal mandibular joint, (TMJ) to become misaligned causing an improper bite pattern.  A slouched position can restrict your breathing due to a decreased ability for the rib cage to expand and contract.  An overarched lumbar spine due to weak abdominal muscles can cause low back pain, misaligned hips, and uneven wear and tear on knees and ankles.   These abnormal repetitive body positions turn into bad habits that disrupt overall wellness.  The good news is that once you recognize what can be corrected, your posture can improve.

Working on core strength and flexibility can noticeably improve your posture in just a few weeks.  Awareness of what good posture looks like and correcting bad habits are also important.  A few questions that are helpful to periodically ask yourself are

-Is my chin parallel to the floor?

-Are my ears aligned with my shoulders?

-Are my shoulders down and back?

-Do I have a neutral spine?

-Am I standing with even hips?

-Is my body weight distributed evenly on both feet?

-Are my knees pointing forward?

With a conscious awareness of good posture, you will not only look better, you will feel better and move better.  Proper alignment looks healthy and confident.  You will have more energy since the muscles do not have to work as hard in a neutral position.  Your breathing quality will improve and deliver more oxygen to the cells.  Practicing better posture is a key to better overall health.  A chiropractor can help correct postural imbalances and alleviate postural related pain.  They can diagnose your postural issues and work with you to develop a treatment plan to help you improve including exercises, stretching and recommendations for work place ergonomics.   If you are concerned about your posture, you can give Complete Care Chiropractic in Williamsville, NY, a call to schedule an appointment with one of the doctors to get you on the road to better posture, health and wellness.

We Can Probably Help You

20 Nov 2019 Blog

Most people at some point in their lives experience back pain.  As a chiropractor, I find myself in a common scenario where someone I know asks for advice for themselves or for a loved one that is experiencing some kind of pain in their back or neck.  They will describe to me what is going on, when it started, how it feels, and what seems to make it worse or better.  The next thing that happens is, I smile, because I know I can help.  They ask me if this is something chiropractic can help and my answer is almost always, “YES!”  Chiropractic focuses on disorders of the musculoskeletal system and the nervous system. Neuromuscular conditions related but not limited to the low back, mid, and upper back along with the neck.  This can include pain or numbness and tingling that radiates to the arms and legs.  It also includes headaches, muscle stiffness or weakness.  Chiropractors work with other parts of the body too, knees, shoulders and TMJ to name a few.

People often want to try the most conservative approaches first such as ibuprofen, waiting it out, heat and ice but when things don’t resolve with that they start exploring more options but sometimes don’t quite know where to start or what to expect.  Chiropractic is also conservative care so it is the perfect next step.  It is non-invasive, natural, safe and effective.  It is also relatively simple to make an appointment.  No referral is needed, you just pick up the phone and call.  From there the staff will find an appointment time that best fits your schedule.  At Complete Care Chiropractic, we are open 7 days a week and have 4 doctors on staff so making an appointment is easy.

At the first visit, there will be some paperwork to fill out before the appointment and then you will see the Chiropractor.  The initial visit takes about 30 minutes and a history and physical exam will be done.  The chiropractor will evaluate range of motion, alignment, reflexes, muscle function, neurologic, sensory function and conduct some orthopedic testing.  If more information is needed you may be referred for imaging or additional testing.  This information will be used to determine a diagnosis and structure a treatment plan for your condition.  The chiropractor will explain your condition, recommend a treatment plan and review the benefits and risks of all the procedures.

Most often you will be treated the first visit.  A treatment may consist of many different techniques depending on your condition.  A chiropractic adjustment is almost always performed, and can be paired with muscle work, stretching or additional modalities such as cold laser or instrument assisted soft tissue mobilization such as the Graston® Technique.  The purpose of a chiropractic adjustment is to restore joint mobility by applying a high velocity, low amplitude force into joints that have become hypomobile as a result of tissue injury.  The injury can be caused from numerous causes varying from accidents, repetitive stress, poor posture, improper lifting among many. A chiropractic adjustment restores mobility therefore reducing inflammation, muscle tightness and pain to promote healing. At the end of the visit you will be given recommendations for home care for example some stretching exercises or perhaps icing instructions.  Often a patient leaves the office feeling better than when they came in.

Through the eyes of a doctor, I can honestly say there are few more rewarding experiences than helping a patient get better so they can do all the things that are meaningful to them in their life again.  I am so thankful when a friend or family member trusts me and asks for advice so I can open the door to wellness for them.  At Complete Care Chiropractic we are dedicated to helping you reach your wellness goals.  Complete Care Chiropractic is open 7 days a week and is always accepting new patients.  We welcome you to call and schedule an appointment with us today at (716)580-3577 to take the next step towards improving your overall health.

Our Doctors are committed to addressing these issues, properly diagnosing them, and creating an individualized treatment plan that can help you recover. When dealing with Workers Comp and No Fault insurance, it really helps to have experienced people who have navigated these systems for years. Our front desk associates are well versed at the ins and outs of these systems and can help steer our patients in the right direction. Accidents occur everyday and everyday we treat those injuries.

We are open 7 days a week. We believe that offering our care everyday allows us to best serve our patients and our community. Dr. Will treats Sunday, Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday. Dr. Niccole treats Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. Dr. Pat treats Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. Dr. Julia treats Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Saturday. If you are on the fence about calling us, please visit our website and see what we are all about. We are also very passionate about respecting our patient’s time. When you treat with us we honor your appointment times and will see you when you are scheduled.

We specialize in treating the entire musculoskeletal system as a whole. A lot of the time this will include Graston Technique. Graston Technique (GT) is a name-brand, evidence based, form of Instrument Assisted Soft-Tissue Mobilization (IASTM) which utilizes a set of six stainless steel instruments. Each instrument has a unique size, shape, and purpose that allows for conformity to different body surfaces resulting in effective treatment of soft tissue dysfunction. Their use can be applied to the muscles, tendons and ligaments for multiple reasons, including, but not limited to, edema pump (decreasing swelling and inflammation), breaking down existing scar tissue, re-instigating the body’s own tissue repair process, and encouraging the proper fiber orientation of tissue repair as it occurs.

We believe in and promote wellness and building good health. One easy way to do that is stretching. Stretching can be a simple way to avoid strains/sprains injuries from occurring. Too often we get caught up in the day to day grind and don’t take the time to take care of our muscles and joints. To help, Complete Care Chiropractic developed a comprehensive manual to help guide and educate our patients and give them step by step protocols to ensure that they have the correct form and proper approach to each stretch. We believe that this manual can help everyone and offer a PDF version on our website.
There are a lot of things that are out of our control. Stretching is a simple way to reach for a level of wellness that can only help.

Complete Care Chiropractic has a real passion for treating athletes in our community. We focus on young athletes who might be injured, dealing with a chronic condition, or want to maintain a level of wellness that helps them stay fit and succeed on the field, court, or gym. There is such an emphasis on conditioning and training in today’s athletic programs and we are so proud to be a big part of that. Chiropractic care is an amazing approach at recovery from injuries and our Doctors have dedicated themselves to properly diagnosing the condition, creating an effective treatment plan that works for our patients, and measuring the results that they see in our athletes. We accommodate all walks of life and are open 7 days a week to give our patients the best chance of treating and healing on a consistent basis. Headache Relief in Williamsville, NY

11 Nov 2019 Blog

It’s reported that more than 37 million Americans suffer from headaches on a regular basis. Whether the root of the problem is hereditary, environmental or due to lifestyle factors, people with headache pain are looking for one thing—relief. Research suggests that even a short massage session of 30 minutes can improve headache pain.

There are several different types of headaches and each one can cause pain in a different region of the head. Several of them also come with symptoms such as nausea, sensitivity to light and/or sound, and some even cause you to see an “aura”. The important thing to consider, is if you are experiencing headaches on a regular basis, see a Neurologist for testing and a diagnosis. Massage Therapists can not and should not treat without a proper diagnosis.

The pain associated with tension-type, migraine and sinus headaches can all be eased with massage. There are a few different techniques that a massage therapist can use to help you get relief depending on what type of headache you have and where you feel it. Through Gait Analysis, Deep Tissue and Trigger Point massage techniques of the neck, face and head, many headache sufferers have found relief without excess medication.

I suffer from headaches myself, and through massage therapy and chiropractic care, I have been able to stop taking all headache medication. (You results may not be the same)

If you suffer from headaches, stop in or call us at (716) 580-3577 to schedule an appointment!

Chiropractic and Headaches

1 Nov 2019 Blog

Headaches affect most people at some point in their lives.  They are often a reason why people miss work, school or can’t participate in some of their daily activities.  There are many kinds of headaches that present in different ways.  All of them cause varying degrees of discomfort in the head. Fortunately, only a small percentage of headaches are warning signals as a result of a serious pathologic underlying cause.  Most headaches are not caused by disease and the headache itself is the concern.  There are three general categories of headaches.  These include migraines, cluster and tension type.

Migraine headaches can cause severe throbbing or pulsing pain, often but not always on one side of the head.  They can last for hours or even days.  They are often preceded by a warning sign referred to as aura.  They are often accompanied by sensitivity to light, and sound, nausea and or vomiting.

Cluster headaches occur in cluster periods that last weeks to months followed by periods of remission.  Pain is severe on one side of the head, usually accompanied tearing eyes and nasal discharge.

Tension headaches are a tight feeling around the head or behind the eye and are often associated with muscle pain.  They can be mild, moderate or severe and can last days to weeks.

Tension headaches are the most common type.  Tension headaches are caused by muscle contractions in the head, neck and upper back areas of the body. Research has shown that chiropractic is very effective in treating this type of headache.   There are many things that can trigger tension headaches but some of the most common are-

-poor posture

-sitting in a position for a long period of time (ie. at work in front of a computer)

-lack of sleep

-eye strain

-a cold or illness

-decreased intake of water

-skipping meals

-food sensitivities

By identifying the underlying causes of the headache you can begin to work on correcting the things that are triggering your headaches.  For example, you can drink more water, get adequate sleep, correct your posture and take breaks when you are in a prolonged position.  This can help prevent the headaches from occurring.  Chiropractic care can help treat the source of the headache by correcting the tension in the muscles with soft tissue muscle work combined with specific chiropractic adjustments.  It is a safe and effective solution in the treatment and prevention of headaches.  Tension headaches often respond to treatment and the resolution of chronic tension headaches can affect your quality of life.  Chiropractic care can also help decrease the intensity and frequency of migraine type headaches.

Doctors of chiropractic can assess, diagnose and manage headaches.  A thorough history and evaluation will allow the doctor to rule out any serious pathologies and determine whether chiropractic care is an appropriate treatment for you.  The chiropractor can refer a patient for x-rays or MRI to further determine a diagnosis if clinically indicated.  Using all of the information, a chiropractor will recommend a treatment plan that is right for you.  Along with treatment, the doctor will be able to provide advice in care for the headaches at home such as icing or heat, lifestyle modifications, stretching and exercise and nutrition advice to help resolve you headaches now and in the future.

Through the Eyes of a Doctor – The Young Athlete

23 Oct 2019 Blog

Through the Eyes of a Doctor – The Young Athlete

A 13 year old female presented to our office accompanied by her mother with a chief complaint of chronic left knee pain and swelling on and off since the age of five. She denies any particular mechanism of injury and reports the pain increases with prolonged walking, running, dance, and lacrosse and improves with ice, wearing a soft knee brace, and swimming. She describes the pain as severe, sore, ache, sharp at times, only experienced with activity, and localized just below the knee cap. She mentions that at times the pain can travel to the outside of the lower left leg and ankle. Upon review, her past medical history was unremarkable; however, her mother does mention that she had been dancing regularly since the age of three and just recently began lacrosse. Her mother goes on to described that she had been evaluated by an Orthopedist numerous times throughout her childhood, most recently resulting in an x-ray followed-up eventually by an MRI which were both negative for fracture or structural deformity, ultimately arriving at the diagnosis of “Patellar Tendonitis” subsequent to “Osgood-Schlatter Disease”.

Upon examination, postural observation revealed hyperextension of both knees, elevation of the left hip, and inward (valgus) stress on the left knee. Lumbar and left knee ranges of motion where within normal limits; however, flexion and extension of the left knee revealed tightness as well as soreness through the left thigh (quadriceps) and patellar tendon region. Orthopedic testing of the left knee was negative as well for ligamentous and/or meniscus involvement in addition to lumbar orthopedic tests. Palpation of the lumbar musculature revealed severe spasm, extending into the gluteal region on both sides. Assessment of joint motion revealed severe pelvic misalignment and restrictions through the right and left sacroiliac joints. With the above findings the diagnosis of pelvic region segmental dysfunction was made, in addition to patellar tendinitis.

The patient was placed on an initial treatment plan of 3x/week for 4 weeks which consisted of Graston Technique applied to the quadriceps and patellar tendon of the left knee in order to increase blood flow in the area and stimulate efficient healing, Low Level Cold Laser Therapy applied to the left patellar tendon to decrease inflammation and accelerate the healing process, Manual Soft Tissue Therapy applied to the lumbar paraspinal musculature and gluteal musculature, as well as Chiropractic Manipulative Therapy applied to the sacroiliac joints of the pelvis. In addition the patient was given home care recommendations which included stretching and strengthening exercises of the thigh, gluteal musculature and low back. Within the first week off treatment the patient began to experience significant signs of improvement. By the end of the second week she began to re-introduce certain physical activities. As progress sustained, the patient’s treatment plan was tapered down (2x/week for 4 weeks, 1x/ week for 4 weeks, etc.) until she reached a point of being completely pain free despite activities. The patient continues to treat at our office one time a month as part of her wellness routine in order to maintain the progress of her condition. She is currently dancing and playing lacrosse multiple days, weekly, without experience any pain or limitation and feeling stronger than ever.

In this case, the patients’ ongoing knee pain was directly linked to the misalignment and dysfunctional motion of her pelvis. It is important to remember that we are one closed kinetic change of biomechanical movement. In that sense, when there is a change in one region of the body, likely it will impact another in some way, shape, or form. Keep this in mind if you ever begin to experience discomfort and reach out to Complete Care Chiropractic for further investigation. The earlier the treatment process begins, the better the chances for a full recovery.

Therapy Dog Makes a Difference in Williamsville Chiropractic Office

15 Oct 2019 Blog

Two years ago we welcomed Daisy to our family with the goal of making her an official therapy dog. We have put in the time with training, research, and caring for our girl. Having her in the office regularly has proven to be an amazing beginning to our patient’s visits. Her ability to greet our patients at the door helps our patients remain relaxed and comfortable while dealing with injuries, symptoms, conditions, or their wellness visits.

On Saturday, 8-24-19 Daisy took and passed her Official Therapy Dog test!!!! She will be registered and certified to visit at health centers, hospitals, airports, and hopefully schools. Of course she is always at the office on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays.
We are so proud of her and thank all of our patients for filling our office with love for her. If you come to Complete Care Chiropractic, make sure you give her some extra scratches and love.

Congratulations Daisy!!!!!!!
